John Nelson Besse (1830-1924), born in Maine, came to California in 1850, to Santa Cruz in the 1860s, and later to Watsonville. In the late 1880s he moved to King City, in Monterey County, but is buried in Santa Cruz along with his wife Martha, a daughter of Eli Moore. Nephew Milton Besse has a bio in Guinn (p648) that includes info on John.
