James F. Cunningham (1844-1907, Harrison p316), born in New Brunswick, Canada, came to the San Lorenzo Valley penniless in 1870, after the San Francisco bank holding his savings went bust. He squatted on unclaimed timber land near Felton, and proceeded from there to ownership of a mercantile business in Felton, a similar business in Boulder Creek, a sawmill near Boulder Creek, and a planing mill in Santa Cruz.
