*From Rowland database: "Old Buildings - WERNER Brick Bldg - on Front st. Built in 1857; said first brick bldg in SC. Built by John Werner, cost $3000; J. W. Towne burned the brick. Werner, before he built it, occupied a wooden building he had erected in 1853. The old wooden building in 1892 was still in use on Front st. as boarding house. The brick Building was razed ^by Werner^ in 1892 to enlarge the A. C. Snyder store, which stretched through from Pacific avenue." John Werner (1827-1899) was a German immigrant who came to Santa Cruz ftom San Jose in 1853, in company with fellow German immigrant Charles Bern. Werner successfully established a business as a saddler (leatherwork).
