James Briar came to Santa Cruz as a Methodist minister, via Death Valley in a party that also included the John Arcan family. Briar became pastor of the fledgling Methodist congregation in Santa Cruz in 1850, but later switched to the Congregational church (Riptide CE5) after leaving Santa Cruz.
