"Hanging on the Water Street Bridge: A Santa Cruz Lynching", by Geoffrey Dunn, SCPL Local History Articles (an excerpt from Santa Cruz Is In the Heart). From the article: "May 3, 1877, the two bodies dangling from the Water Street Bridge were already stiff from rigor mortis. A large crowd had gathered on the banks of the San Lorenzo River to gape at the hanging corpses, victims of an angry lynch mob the night before. It was well into midmorning before the bodies were finally cut down. . . . The bodies of two men, Francisco Arias and Jose Chamales . . ."
