Big Basin Redwoods State Park is the oldest California state park, established in 1902. Road access is via Highway 236 from Highway 9.
In 1977, the former Rancho del Oso of the Theodore Hoover family was added to the park. The land, which connects Big Basin to the coast via Waddell Creek, previously belonged to William Waddell.
