Jose Vincent DeLaveaga, born in Mexico, purchased a large tract of hilly land in 1870, at what is now the north-east edge of Santa Cruz. He developed the land with a residence, riding trails, and extensive landscaping. In 1894, he gave the property to the city, on condition that it be used as a park. It is now DeLaveaga Park, largest park in the city, and providing the widest range of recreational facilities.
