Fuller Prewitt Sinclair was , according to Riptide, born in Canada, and came west as a trapper in the same party as Isaac Graham and Job Dye. Arriving in our area in the mid-1840s, he joined Fremont's California Battalion in 1846. Sinclair built Santa Cruz' first hotel, Union House (later Santa Cruz House), and later moved to the Corralitos area.

How Riptide settled on this name spelling is not known. In later interviews, Dye remembered his name as "Pruett St. Clair". Elliott has "Truitt St. Clair" and mentions an association with Paul Sweet.
