David K. Abeel bought the Douglas House hotel, on Beach Hill, in 1877, transforming it by 1890 into the Sea Beach Hotel.

The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture (4th ed. 2023) describes Abeel as "a capitalist from Kansas City", Chapter One, item (37), page 22.
