According to Chase, Silas Bennett lived in a little cottage erected (ca. 1850) on a site adjacent to what became the Pope House in 1862. The book states that Bennett helped build the famous mill in which gold was discovered on the American River in 1848. A daughter, Orytha, is mentioned in Rowland as wife of Gatch, Thomas M..
