From Santa Cruz County history wiki
Gustavus Bowman (1832-1912), was a Santa Cruz hardware merchant, and served as mayor in 1888-92. He had a large home built on Third Street in 1885, which was replaced in 1936 by the current residence. Older brother John Bowman was a hardware merchant and tinsmith in Soquel. According to the Find-a-Grave page, the Bowman parents emigrated from Germany to Ohio, where the sons were born, and changed the name spelling from Bauman to Bowman.
