Michael Lodge was an Irish immigrant who arrived in Santa Cruz County in 1828. He was naturalized, married Martina Castro (his 2nd wife), and disappeared in 1849 while returning from the gold fields. Powell explores the many unresolved questions about his disappearance and presumed death.

Lodge's 1st wife was Luz Garcia, daughter of an early Branciforte invalido (Rowland, 55).
