The name Porter Gulch is commonly used to denote both a creek and the ravine in which it flows. Porter Gulch Road follows the creek, near to and paralleling the western border of the Cabrillo College property. Jean Fourcade, who had married into the Castro family, established a tannery there in the 1850s(?), which was later taken over by the partnership of Ben Hames and Ben Porter.
