Theodore Vinton Mathews (1847-1900, Harrison p.290), born in Pennsylvania, came to Santa Cruz in 1878. He was soon appointed deputy to County Assessor and Recorder H. E. Makinney. He was elected to the separated office of County Assessor from 1884 to 1890. After that, he went into business in real estate and insurance, taking the place of retiring Samuel Drennan in a partnership with J. D. Chace.
