The Santa Cruz Fire Department arose from groups of early volunteer fire-fighters such as the hose-cart teams.

The first city fire station was just off Pacific Avenue on Church Street. Today's downtown fire station, shown at right, was built with WPA funds in 1936-40, at the same time as and nextdoor to the Civic Auditorium.

Fire Station No. 2 was built in 1947 on Soquel Avenue in the Eastside neighborhood.

Multiple other fire departments cover other areas of Santa Cruz County.
