Stewart was also instrumental in establishing the Santa Cruz Mountain Wine Company in 1887, and building a winery on Market Street in Santa Cruz. The Etha Hill enterprise failed in 1889, and Stewart was not heard from thereafter. Santa Cruz Mountain Wine Company failed in 1898, and Ben Lomond Wine Co. acquired the Market Street winery the next year.

Dr. John A. Stewart, born in Scotland, came to the county in 1883 and planted a 50-acre vineyard in the Scotts Valley area. Stewart was also instrumental in establishing the Santa Cruz Mountain Wine Company in 1887, and building a winery on Market Street in Santa Cruz. The Etha Hill enterprise failed in 1889, and Stewart was not heard from thereafter. Santa Cruz Mountain Wine Company failed in 1898, and Ben Lomond Wine Co. acquired the Market Street winery the next year.
