A Howling Wilderness, subtitled "a History of the Summit Road Area of the Santa Cruz Mountains 1850-1906", was written by Stephen Payne and published in 1978 in Santa Cruz County by Loma Prieta Publishing Co. The book is out of print, but five excerpts are republished in the SCPL Local History Articles, which include biographies of Josephine McCrackin, "Mountain Charley" McKiernan, and others.
