The Davenport cement plant was built by William Dingee in 1906. Dingee, however, went broke the following year. The plant had various later owners before shutting down in 2010. As of 2024, the shut-down industrial structures remain the dominant built feature of the Davenport community, which grew up around the plant, replacing Davenport Landing as the area's population center.

A large tract of adjacent land belonging to the cement company - parts of which are limestone quarries - was acquired in 2014 by a consortium of conservation organizations, including Santa Cruz County Land Trust. An upland area, accessible from Empire Grade Road (away from the quarries) are now open to the public as San Vicente Redwoods.
